Tips on How to Replace Sports Lighting (Metal halide to LED or Halogen to LED)

When considering replacing metal halide or halogen lights with LED stadium lights, the first factor to consider is the lumen output. For example, if each 2000W metal halide light has an output of 70,000 lumens, an LED light with a similar output can be used to replace it. It is important to note that the lumen output indicates brightness, while the wattage represents power consumption. Therefore, it is crucial to consult with sports lighting contractors to determine the appropriate LED model and lighting efficacy.

After selecting the correct LED lumen to replace the old stadium lights, the weight of the luminaires should be considered. Using heavy LED lights may exceed safety standards and pose a danger during sports events. It is recommended to use lightweight luminaires on light poles or stadium roofs.

Another significant aspect to consider is the beam angle, which affects the lighting uniformity of the stadium. A large beam angle can cause the light beam to spread and become more diverged, leading to a scattered light beam. A careful and precise arrangement of each lighting is required for optimal results. Common beam angles for sports fields are between 10 to 25 degrees, with 1000W and 2000W LED lights.

The color temperature of the lighting is also essential, as it affects the light color. Normally, a 5000K to 6000K lighting is used for sports fields, as it provides a natural daylight feel that is better for sports players. However, a high color temperature may increase blue light intensity, which should be avoided.

Finally, the price of LED lights may initially be higher than metal halide or halogen bulbs. However, the future running and maintenance costs should also be considered, as LED lights have a longer lifespan and use less energy, resulting in cost savings over time. DMX and DALI are the mainstream sports lighting control systems that can be used to manipulate the brightness and on/off functions of multiple luminaires.
