In 2020, many of our projects will have to be shelved due to COVID-19. But as things have improved, sporting events have resumed somewhat everywhere. So some facilities have been upgraded successfully this year.
The LBI International Cricket Ground in Guyana. The Minister of Human Services and Social Protection, Dr Vindhya Persaud, flipped a switch on Wednesday night and unveiled the international standard lights on the refurbished floor of the intended community centre in La Bonne, which is now controlled by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
Over the past two years, the East Coast Demerara facility has undergone a major restoration project, with the ultimate aim of hosting first-class cricket matches in the next two years.
On Wednesday evening, the GCB held a simple but important ceremony at the venue to demonstrate its commitment to the development of the facility, which also houses the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence (indoor practice facilities and accommodation).
Anand Sanasie, secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board
Anand Sanasie, the GCB secretary, says this is what they have been working towards for the past 10 years, and in the past five years they have been able to secure 99-year leases from GuySuCo, a Guyana sugar company.
He said the stadium was in the first stage of development and the drainage system could “challenge the stadium at any time”.
They plan to build a “state of the art” media centre and a stage, as well as practice facilities at the new players’ stadium, which will have six all-weather courts as they strive to meet international standards.
The northern end of the ground will be the main pavilion for seating and reception boxes.
“In less than two years, the competition venue has been completed, LED lights have been installed, engineers still need to concentrate, and it is expected to be completed within a week,” the secretary explained.
Dr. Vindhya Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Security
“With the progress promised by the new government, I see this as the beginning of great things for the future of cricket and other sporting events,” minister Persaud said happily.
She ordered officials to ensure that the facility would be used not only for cricket matches, but also for the entire community, and hoped to see the women’s team develop.
Dr Persaud, who is also head of the Hindu Dharma Society in Guyana, said the vision of seeing the ground, which has hosted the annual Diwali car race for 40 years, was most pleasing.
Manzoor Nadir, speaker of the National Assembly and president of the Everest Cricket Club, said: “I feel that the future of Guyana cricket will be competitive on many levels. I see the tantalising prizes. I see 100,000 to 20m teams playing for us dollars. This is the future of cricket for me.”

He revealed that there will be a national championship with a prize of nearly C $1 million, and talks are under way to make a car the most valuable player.
Nadir believes Guyans should not only see local stars playing against top teams on television, but also in facilities of this nature in Guyana.
He says the Everest Cricket Club is seeking to install lights of international standard.
Sasenarine Singh, chief executive of Guy SuCo, which closed LBI Estate in 2010, said it was difficult to maintain the land, which had been in existence since 1918, and it was good to see how much it had changed over the years.
Mr Singh added that GuySuCo would continue to support them because they wanted this “success to lead to greater success”.
After the ceremony, more than 40 teams, the West Demerara Masters and Jai Hind Masters, played 10/10.
