Estádio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho—universally known as Estádio do Pacaembu—is one of Brazil’s most historic sports venues. Located in São Paulo, the stadium has hosted some of the nation’s most significant football events since its inauguration in 1940 and remains an important cultural landmark in Brazilian sporting history.
The stadium opened on 27 April 1940, immediately becoming a central stage for major national football competitions. Over the decades, Pacaembu has served as the temporary or occasional home ground for several major São Paulo clubs, including Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo FC, Santos, and Portuguesa.
Estádio do Pacaembu played a vital role in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, hosting six official World Cup matches.
The first World Cup match held at the stadium was a dramatic 3–2 victory for Sweden, who defeated Italy (Italian Republic). This match helped cement Pacaembu’s status as one of the most important World Cup venues of the era.
