Estádio Governador João Castelo, commonly referred to as Castelão de São Luís, is one of the most iconic football venues in the state of Maranhão. Opened in 1982, the stadium was built to serve as a major regional hub for professional football, large-scale sports events, and civic gatherings. With an official seating capacity of 40,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in northern Brazil.
One of the most historic moments in the stadium’s timeline occurred in 1998, when an incredible 97,000 spectators packed the venue to watch Sampaio Corrêa face Santos Futebol Clube—setting a long-standing attendance record that remains part of Brazilian football lore.
Sampaio Corrêa, the primary tenant of the stadium, is one of the most traditional football clubs in Maranhão. Founded in 1923, the club gained significant national recognition and later became the first sports team from São Luís to surpass 100,000 followers on its main social media platform, reflecting strong local and statewide support.
Although Estádio Governador João Castelo has not undergone a major World Cup-style reconstruction, the venue has seen continuous improvements over the years to enhance safety, comfort, and match-day operations. These upgrades were implemented to meet evolving Brazilian football infrastructure standards, with renovations typically focusing on lighting, pitch quality, and basic structural maintenance.
