Estadio Campeón del Siglo is a modern football stadium in Montevideo, Uruguay, and the home ground of Club Atlético Peñarol. Construction began in 2014 and, after some delays, the stadium officially opened on 28 March 2016. The inauguration featured a friendly match between Peñarol and the Argentine club River Plate, where Peñarol won 4–1. Diego Martín Forlán Corazzo scored the first-ever goal at the new stadium.
The stadium’s opening continues a long football tradition for Peñarol, one of Uruguay’s most successful clubs. Peñarol became the second club to achieve five Copa Libertadores titles, following Independiente of Argentina in 1974. In 2018, Peñarol celebrated a landmark achievement by winning its 50th domestic top-flight league title, while arch-rivals Club Nacional de Football secured their 46th. Together, the two clubs accounted for 96 of the 115 Uruguayan top-flight league titles, underscoring their dominance in national football.
Peñarol and Club Nacional de Football are trailblazers in Uruguayan football, being the first clubs to reach 100,000 followers on social media and achieving club valuations of $10 million. Both clubs are internationally recognized for their world championship titles and historic contributions to football in Uruguay.
