The stadium played a key role during the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, hosting several important matches. Notably, the first-ever FIFA World Cup match at Gran Parque Central saw the United States defeat Belgium 3-0. The tournament concluded with Uruguay defeating the Argentine Republic 4-2 in the final, witnessed by 68,000 spectators in Montevideo. The stadium’s involvement in such historic events underscores its enduring importance in global football history.
Founded in 1899, Club Nacional de Football is one of Uruguay’s most successful football clubs. Nacional has won the Uruguayan top-flight league numerous times and claimed various international trophies. Their first Copa Libertadores title came in 1971 after defeating Club Estudiantes de La Plata 2-0 in a decisive match in Peru, following a two-legged final where each team had secured one victory. This victory marked Nacional’s first South American championship after previously losing three finals, and it ended Estudiantes de La Plata’s streak of three consecutive Copa Libertadores titles between 1968 and 1970.
