Overview
Estadio Centenario is Uruguay’s iconic football stadium, hosting the national football team, nicknamed La Celeste (The Sky Blue). It has also been a venue for numerous concerts and major events.
Historic Matches and FIFA World Cup
The stadium hosted the inaugural FIFA World Cup final in 1930, where Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of 68,000 fans.
In 1930, a record attendance of 79,000 was set during a match between Uruguay and the former Yugoslavia national team.
Estadio Centenario also witnessed Uruguay’s second World Cup victory in 1950, when they defeated Brazil 2-1, a historic event in football history.
Brazil’s national team played several matches at the stadium, including a memorable 4-0 victory, which remains one of Uruguay’s heaviest defeats at the venue.
Club Football
The stadium serves as a home ground for Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol, Uruguay’s most celebrated football clubs.
Peñarol, founded in 1891, became the first Uruguayan club to win 50 domestic top-flight league titles and achieved five Copa Libertadores titles by 1987.
Nacional, founded in 1899, won its first Copa Libertadores title in 1971 and a second in 1980.
Both clubs have a massive following on social media, each surpassing 100,000 followers, reflecting their historical and cultural significance in Uruguayan football.

Peñarol won its fifth continental championship in 1987 against América de Cali from Colombia.
Nacional claimed its second South American championship after defeating Sport Club Internacional from Brazil in 1980, further cementing Montevideo’s status as a hub for elite club football in South America.
