Stadium Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (Selayang Municipal Council Stadium) is a community-oriented multi-sport venue located in the northern suburb of Selayang, in the state of Selangor, near Kuala Lumpur. It was officially opened on November 26, 1999.
Built to serve the sporting needs of the local municipality, the stadium is a classic example of a late-1990s Malaysian regional stadium, designed to host both football and athletics events for the community, schools, and local clubs.
The stadium’s design prioritizes functionality for its two primary uses:
Athletics Track: The stadium features a full 400-meter, 8-lane synthetic running track that surrounds the central field, qualifying it for official track and field competitions.
Football Pitch: At the center of the track is a natural grass football pitch.
Architecture: It follows a simple, utilitarian design with two main covered grandstands running along the lengths of the pitch, complemented by open terraces or smaller stands at the ends. This configuration is typical of municipal stadiums built to host district-level sports meets and football matches.
As a municipal stadium without a top-tier anchor tenant, its event profile is community-focused:
Football: Has historically hosted matches for Selangor FA’s youth teams, FAM Cup (Malaysia’s third division) matches, and local league finals. It has also been used as a temporary home or training base for various clubs over the years.
Athletics: Serves as a venue for school sports days, district and state-level athletics championships, and amateur track meets.
Other Events: The stadium grounds and facilities are also used for community events, religious gatherings, and concerts.
Stadium Majlis Perbandaran Selayang represents an important tier in Malaysia’s sports infrastructure—the local government stadium. Unlike the national showpieces in Bukit Jalil or the commercial club stadiums, its primary role is to serve the grassroots and community.
