The National Hockey Stadium is Malaysia’s premier and most iconic field hockey venue. Located within the vast Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex in Kuala Lumpur, its history involves two key phases. The original stadium was opened in 1998 as part of the infrastructure for the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Following a decision to create a world-class, dedicated hockey facility, the original structure was demolished. Construction of the new, purpose-built stadium began in 2007. This modern arena was completed and has since become the central hub for hockey in Southeast Asia.
The current stadium was designed specifically for hockey, moving away from the earlier multi-purpose model. Key features include:
Blue Turf: It features a state-of-the-art blue synthetic turf, conforming to international competition standards, which provides excellent ball roll and visibility for players and spectators.
Lighting: Equipped with a high-quality floodlighting system to facilitate night matches and television broadcasts.
Spectator Stands: Covered stands on both sides of the pitch provide shelter for the majority of spectators.
Training Facilities: The complex includes additional training pitches and support facilities for teams.

FIH Hockey World League / Pro League: Regularly hosts rounds of these premier global competitions.
Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Events: The go-to venue for major Asian tournaments, including the Asia Cup and Asian Champions Trophy.
Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: While the prestigious annual Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is held in Ipoh, this stadium has hosted editions or significant matches.
2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games: Served as the main hockey venue for the Games held in Kuala Lumpur.
The stadium is the fortress for Malaysia’s national hockey teams:
Speedy Tigers (Men’s National Team): The men’s team uses this as their primary home ground for test matches, continental qualifiers, and international friendlies.
Malaysian Tigress (Women’s National Team): The women’s national team also plays its major home fixtures here.
