Stadion H. Dimurthala is a historic football stadium and a landmark in Banda Aceh, the capital of the special region of Aceh, Indonesia. Inaugurated on March 15, 1977, it was indeed built to be and remains one of the main sports venues in Aceh. The stadium is named in honor of H. Dimurthala, a prominent local sports figure and former mayor of Banda Aceh who was instrumental in its development.
The stadium holds a deep place in the community’s memory, having witnessed both the fervor of local football and the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, after which it served as a crucial humanitarian relief and displacement camp.
The stadium’s design is typical of its era, built as a functional multi-purpose venue.
Original Capacity: Upon opening, it had a capacity of approximately 25,000.
Post-Tsunami Renovation: Severely damaged in the 2004 tsunami, the stadium underwent significant reconstruction with international aid. It reopened in 2007 with a reduced, modernized capacity of around 20,000, featuring improved seating and facilities.
Architecture: It features a horseshoe design with a main grandstand and terraces. The running track confirms its multi-purpose past, though it is primarily known for football.
The stadium’s identity is inextricably linked to Persiraja Banda Aceh, the historic and passionately supported local club.
Historic Tenant: For decades, this was the fortress of Persiraja, hosting countless dramatic matches in Indonesia’s top leagues (Galatama, Liga Indonesia). The atmosphere during Persiraja’s home games was legendary in Indonesian football.
Current Use: While Persiraja has fluctuated between divisions and occasionally used other grounds, Stadion H. Dimurthala remains its spiritual home and primary venue for important matches. It also hosts local league games, school sports tournaments, and athletics meets.
Symbol of Resilience: Beyond sport, the stadium is a powerful symbol of Aceh’s recovery and resilience. Its story of destruction and rebirth mirrors that of the region itself.
