Construction of the Stade Adrar began in 2004, designed as a modern multi-purpose venue capable of hosting both football and athletics events. Since its completion, the stadium has become one of the most significant sports infrastructures in Morocco.
The stadium officially opened with a football match in which Hassania Union Sport d’Agadir (HUSA) defeated their opponents 1–0, thanks to a 76th-minute goal by Saad Lemti. Shortly after its inauguration, the Moroccan national football team played its first match at the venue against South Africa, ending in a 1–1 draw.
Morocco’s national team played their first-ever FIFA World Cup match in 1970 in Mexico, while South Africa made their debut on football’s biggest stage in 1998 in France—highlighting the long football histories behind the teams that inaugurated games at Stade Adrar.
Stade Adrar earned international recognition when it hosted its first FIFA Club World Cup match in 2013, attended by 34,000 spectators. The quarter-final was won by the Chinese club now known as Guangzhou FC, who defeated Al-Ahly, one of Africa’s most successful clubs.
The Egyptian side Al-Ahly holds numerous continental records. They became the first African sports club to reach 10 million followers on social media and achieved their 10th CAF Champions League title in 2021, defeating South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in Casablanca.
The venue also hosted the tournament’s semi-finals:
Raja Casablanca won the first semi-final at Stade Adrar, beating Mexican side CF Monterrey 2–1.
FC Bayern München won the second semi-final by defeating Guangzhou FC.
Bayern went on to win the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Raja 2–0 in the final. Raja’s run made them only the second African club in history to reach a FIFA world championship final.
The first African team to reach a FIFA Club World Cup final was TP Mazembe of DR Congo in 2010. They faced the legendary Italian club FC Internazionale Milano, who were crowned European champions in 1964 and won their first world title that same year. This context underscores the significance of Raja’s and Mazembe’s achievements for African football.
HUSA (Hassania Union Sport d’Agadir), founded in 1946, is one of Morocco’s most respected and widely supported clubs. They became the first sports club from Agadir to reach 100,000 followers on their main social media platform.
HUSA made their debut in the CAF Champions League in 2003. Their first match ended in a 0–0 draw, but they were later eliminated by ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast, who advanced to the group stage. Eight clubs competed in that stage, with Egypt’s Ismaily winning the final and Nigeria’s Enyimba finishing as runners-up.
