The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium is a stadium of staggering scale and political symbolism. Located on Rungrado Islet in the Taedong River in Pyongyang, its construction began in 1986 and it was inaugurated on International Workers’ Day (May 1) in 1989. As its name denotes, it commemorates both its location and the socialist holiday.
It is officially recognized as the largest stadium in the world by seating capacity, a title it has held since its opening, embodying the architectural ambition and ideological presentation of the state.
The stadium’s design is as imposing as its purpose:
Gigantic Scale: The roof structure, comprised of 16 arches arranged in a distinctive petal-like ring, spans over 2.2 million square feet and is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
True Multi-Purpose Venue: It is engineered not just for sport but for the Mass Games—the colossal, meticulously choreographed performances involving tens of thousands of participants that are a unique feature of North Korean political culture. It also hosts major athletics meets, football matches, and political rallies.
Beyond sport, the stadium is a primary venue for state political life.
2018 Inter-Korean Summit: On September 19, 2018, it hosted a historic moment when South Korean President Moon Jae-in delivered a speech from its pitch alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, addressing themes of “cooperation, peace, and unification” to a crowd of 150,000. This event underscored the stadium’s role as the nation’s most significant ceremonial platform.
The stadium serves as the premier home for the national football teams of the DPRK.
1966 FIFA World Cup: The DPRK men’s team made history at the 1966 World Cup in England. After losing their opener to the Soviet Union and drawing with Chile, they produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by defeating Italy 1-0. They advanced to the quarter-finals, where they led Portugal 3-0 before eventually losing 5-3, eliminated by Eusébio and his team.
1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup: The DPRK women’s team made its World Cup debut in 1999. They lost their first match to Nigeria, won their second against Denmark, and were eliminated after a loss to the eventual champions, the United States.
Both teams have played significant home matches at this colossal arena.
The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium is the ultimate architectural expression of the North Korean state’s ideology—a venue built for mass mobilization, national presentation, and the staging of power. Its primary function for the Arirang Mass Games (now called the Grand Mass Gymnastics and Artistic Performance) distinguishes it from any other stadium globally.
While it hosts sporting events, its identity is inseparable from its political and ceremonial role.
