The construction of the stadium started in 1986. It was known as the SkyDome between 1989 and 2005. The Rogers Centre became the largest venue by capacity in Ontario. It is situated next to the CN Tower, the former tallest tower of the world. The Rogers Centre is known as a venue for numerous events, like American football, baseball, basketball, Canadian football, concerts, football, monster truck events, supercross and wrestling.
The stadium was the home of Toronto Argonaut Football Club, nicknamed Argos, between 1989 and 2015. In 1914, they won their first-ever Grey Cup title in Toronto in front of 10,000 spectators.
The Rogers Centre also hosted numerous home games of the Toronto Raptors between 1995 and 1999. They won their first-ever NBA championship title in 2019. The Raptors won the title after beating the Golden State Warriors from California. The Toronto Raptors became the first National Basketball Association champions from Canada. The Raptors reached the finals of the NBA in 2019 after beating the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Toronto Blue Jays have been tenants of the Rogers Centre since 1989. They are Major League Baseball members. The Toronto Blue Jays baseball club was founded in 1977 and it became the first Canadian baseball club with 1 million followers on its main social media page. In 1992, they won the World Series for the first time in their history. They also won the following edition of the World Series.
In 2012, the Rogers Centre hosted a CONCACAF Champions League game between Toronto FC and the LA Galaxy. 47,000 people attended the football match, which became a record attendance for a home game of Toronto FC. In 2018, the Major League Soccer club became the second Canadian club in the final round of the CONCACAF Champions League. The club which is now known as CF Montréal became the first Canadian club in the final round of the North American championship for football clubs. Toronto FC lost the first leg against the Mexican side CD Guadalajara and they won the second leg. Club Deportivo Guadalajara won the continental football tournament after penalties.
