McMahon Stadium is a historic outdoor sports venue located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Opened in 1960, the stadium has long been associated with Canadian football and remains one of the most important football venues in Western Canada. With a seating capacity of approximately 35,000 spectators, McMahon Stadium continues to play a central role in Calgary’s sporting landscape.
McMahon Stadium gained international recognition when it served as one of the venues for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, which were hosted by Calgary. During the Games, the stadium staged the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as other Olympic events, cementing its place in Canadian sporting history.
The stadium is best known as the long-time home of the Calgary Stampeders, one of the most successful teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Stampeders have won the Grey Cup on multiple occasions and have built a strong fan culture at McMahon Stadium.
In addition to the Stampeders, Calgary Dinos and Calgary Colts also use the venue for Canadian football games, reinforcing its role as a hub for both professional and university-level sport.
McMahon Stadium has also hosted association football matches. In 1981, the venue was home to the Calgary Boomers, a club competing in the North American Soccer League (NASL). During that season, the Boomers attracted an average home attendance of approximately 10,000 spectators.
The Calgary Boomers were one of several Canadian teams in the NASL in 1981, alongside the Edmonton Drillers, Manic de Montréal, Toronto Blizzard, and Vancouver Whitecaps, reflecting a significant period in the development of professional football in Canada.
Over the decades, McMahon Stadium has undergone multiple upgrades and renovations to maintain modern standards while preserving its historic character. Its ability to host Canadian football, international events, and major ceremonies has made it a landmark venue in Alberta.
