The PreZero Arena, home of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, officially opened on 24 January 2009. The stadium construction began in 2007 at a cost of €60 million, providing a modern, all-seated facility designed for Bundesliga and international football. The venue also accommodates ice hockey events, concerts, and other multi-purpose sports competitions.
The arena opened with a match between 1899 Hoffenheim and Energie Cottbus. Hoffenheim, founded in 1899, rose rapidly through the German football league system and played their first Bundesliga season in 2008–09, drawing an average home attendance of 28,000. The club is recognized as one of the first German football teams with 100,000 social media followers and is valued at $100 million, reflecting its modern approach to sports management and fan engagement.
The PreZero Arena has hosted international football fixtures, including its first FIFA Women’s World Cup match on 26 June 2011, where France defeated Nigeria 1–0 in front of 25,000 spectators. Other national women’s teams that played at the stadium during the tournament included Colombia, New Zealand, Sweden, Mexico, and the United States.
The German national team (Die Mannschaft) played their first match at the PreZero Arena on 9 September 2018, defeating Peru before 25,000 fans. Die Mannschaft has since returned for qualifiers and friendlies, continuing the arena’s role as a modern venue for international football.
In 2020, the stadium was the center of attention when Bayern München supporters displayed an offensive banner aimed at Dietmar Hopp, the major investor in 1899 Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga match was temporarily suspended, but players on both sides demonstrated solidarity by passing the ball to each other before the game resumed. This incident highlighted the stadium’s prominence in contemporary football culture and Bundesliga narratives.
