The MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA, one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest sports venues, opened in 2004 with a construction cost of €240 million. Featuring a retractable roof, it offers a versatile environment for football, American football, concerts, and large-scale events. The arena was previously known as the LTU Arena (2004–2009) and ESPRIT Arena (2009–2018). It has hosted numerous world-famous artists and major sporting events.
Germany National Team: The stadium hosted its first match of the German national football team in 2005, drawing a 2-2 result against Argentina. The venue has since been used for friendly matches and international qualifiers, highlighting Germany’s rich football heritage.
European Club Football: Bayer Leverkusen has played several home games at the arena. In 1988, they won the UEFA Cup, and in 2002, reached a European championship final, making them the sixth German club to do so after Eintracht Frankfurt (1960), Bayern München (1974), Borussia Mönchengladbach (1977), HSV (1980), and Borussia Dortmund (1997).
Fortuna Düsseldorf: Founded in 1895, Fortuna Düsseldorf uses the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA for home matches. They were crowned German football champions in 1933, defeating FC Schalke 04 before a crowd of 60,000. The club also won the DFB-Pokal in 1979, with Wolfgang Seel scoring the decisive goal against Hertha BSC. Fortuna is one of the first sports clubs from North Rhine-Westphalia with 100,000 followers on social media.
Rhein Fire: The arena serves as home for Rhein Fire, one of Europe’s most popular American football clubs. The venue provides the club with modern facilities for training, games, and fan engagement, boosting American football’s profile in Germany.
