The HDI-Arena, formerly known as Niedersachsenstadion (1954–2002) and AWD-Arena (2002–2013), is one of Germany’s premier football stadiums. Located in Hanover, Lower Saxony, the venue has a seating capacity of 49,000 and serves as the home ground of Hannover 96, a club founded in 1896. The stadium has undergone multiple renovations to meet international standards, including upgrades to seating, lighting, and media facilities.
1974 FIFA World Cup: Hosted its first-ever World Cup match on 15 June 1974. The Netherlands defeated Uruguay in front of 53,000 spectators. Subsequent matches included a 1-1 draw between Bulgaria and Uruguay, and wins for Brazil against the former German Democratic Republic and Argentina.
2006 FIFA World Cup: The HDI-Arena hosted five matches during the tournament, including the knockout game between France and Spain, with all games played before near-capacity crowds of 43,000. Participating teams included Angola, Costa Rica, France, Ghana, Italy, Korea, Poland, and Mexico.
1988 UEFA European Championship: The stadium hosted its first European Championship matches, including Spain vs. Denmark (Spain won) and Ireland vs. USSR (1-1 draw). Approximately 60,000 fans attended these historic fixtures.
Hannover 96, one of the first sports clubs from Lower Saxony with 100,000 followers on social media, has been the primary tenant of the HDI-Arena.
Championships: Hannover 96 were crowned German football champions in 1938 and won the DFB-Pokal in 1992.
Fan Engagement: The club maintains strong local and international support, regularly drawing near-capacity crowds for Bundesliga matches.
Renowned goalkeeper Robert Enke played for Hannover 96 between 2004 and 2009 and represented the German national team. His tragic death in 2009 deeply affected fans worldwide, with supporters leaving flowers, lighting candles, and signing condolence books at the stadium.
