The MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA, located in Düsseldorf, is one of the largest and most modern sports venues in North Rhine-Westphalia. Construction began in 2002 with a total investment of €240 million, and the stadium opened in 2004. Featuring a retractable roof, it has undergone several name changes: LTU Arena (2004–2009) and ESPRIT Arena (2009–2018). The stadium has hosted numerous concerts by world-famous artists, alongside football and American football events.
The German national football team played its first match at the arena in 2005, a 2–2 draw against Argentina, and the venue has since been used for multiple international fixtures.

In 1988, Bayer Leverkusen won the UEFA Cup, and in 2002, they reached the European Cup final, becoming the sixth German club to do so, following Eintracht Frankfurt (1960), Bayern München (1974), Borussia Mönchengladbach (1977), HSV (1980), and Borussia Dortmund (1997).
