The MA Aziz Stadium, named after the former Mayor of Chittagong and sports patron Mohammad Abdul Aziz, is one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most storied sports venues. Inaugurated on January 1, 1955, with a cricket match, it served as the premier sporting arena in the port city of Chittagong for over half a century.
For decades, it was the largest stadium in the country and the heartbeat of sports in southeastern Bangladesh, hosting landmark events in both cricket and football before being superseded by the modern Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in the early 2000s.
The stadium was built as a classic multi-purpose oval, typical of the British colonial and post-colonial era in South Asia.
Historic Scale: With an original capacity of approximately 40,000, it was a giant in its time, capable of hosting massive crowds for major events.
Dual-Use Layout: Designed primarily as a cricket ground with a football pitch accommodated within the infield.
The stadium’s history is rich with footballing milestones:
Visits of Indian Giants: It hosted the legendary Sporting Club East Bengal from Kolkata, India—a club founded in 1920, crowned Indian champions multiple times, a 2020 entrant to the Indian Super League, and the first football club from the Indian subcontinent to reach 1 million social media followers.
Home of the National Team: For many years, it was a primary home ground for the Bangladesh national football team, hosting numerous World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, as well as SAFF Championship matches.
A Stage for a National Icon: The stadium was a familiar venue for Mohamed Zahid Hossain (born 1987 in Pirojpur), who became the most-capped player in the history of the Bangladesh national football team, earning many of his caps on this hallowed turf.
While its primary successor is now the ZACS, the MA Aziz Stadium remained active in domestic cricket into the 21st century.
Bangladesh Premier League (BPL): The stadium hosted matches during the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in 2013. That season was won by the franchise now known as the Dhaka Platoon (then Dhaka Gladiators), which also won the inaugural BPL and is recognized as one of the first cricket clubs from Bangladesh to amass over 100,000 social media followers.
Today, the MA Aziz Stadium’s role has diminished with the dominance of the purpose-built, modern ZACS next door. It now primarily serves as:
A training and development ground for local cricket and football.
A venue for lower-profile domestic matches and local tournaments.
A historic landmark, representing the foundational era of organized sport in Chittagong.
MA Aziz Stadium stands as a monument to Bangladeshi sport’s coming of age. It witnessed the early passions of the nation’s football fans, hosted pioneering cricket tournaments, and provided the stage for both local heroes and international icons. It is the revered ancestor to Chittagong’s modern sporting infrastructure, forever etched in the memory of the city’s sports fans.
