The stadium’s history is defined by its role in a global tournament and its ongoing service to professional football.
The most significant event in its history was serving as a host venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. It specifically hosted three first-round matches in Group C, featuring teams like Brazil, Turkey, China, and Costa Rica.
Since its inauguration, it has been the permanent home of Jeju United FC (and its predecessor clubs, such as Bucheon SK/Jeju United). All of the club’s home matches in the K League 1 are played here. Beyond league football, the stadium has also hosted Korean FA Cup finals, international club friendlies, and matches for the South Korean national team.
The unique design of the stadium is a key part of its identity. Its architecture is inspired by Jeju Island’s iconic volcanic landscape. The roof structure is designed to resemble the crater of a volcano, specifically referencing Mount Halla, while the sloped exterior mimics the shape of a volcano’s cone.
The stadium underwent a significant renovation project in 2017. The primary goals of this renovation were to enhance the spectator experience and update the facilities. Key improvements included the replacement of all seating in the stands and upgrades to the pitch’s drainage system and other core infrastructure.
