Estádio José Pinheiro Borda, popularly known as Gigante da Beira-Rio, is a historic and iconic football stadium located in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Construction began in 1956, and the stadium officially opened on 6 April 1969 with a match between SC Internacional and Portuguese side SL Benfica, in which Internacional won 2–1. The first goal of the match was scored by Claudiomiro Estrais Ferreira, a Porto Alegre native who went on to play hundreds of matches for Internacional and several for the Brazilian national team.
With a seating capacity of 50,000, Beira-Rio has been a central venue for football in southern Brazil, hosting domestic league matches, international competitions, and major sporting events.
