The Estadio Atanasio Girardot is one of Colombia’s major sports venues, located in Medellín. Named after Manuel Atanasio Girardot Díaz, a Colombian revolutionary leader, the stadium opened with a match between Atlético Nacional and Alianza Lima, ending in a 2-2 draw. With a seating capacity of 45,000, it serves as a central venue for football in Colombia and hosts domestic league matches, international competitions, and major sporting events.
The stadium hosted several matches during the 2001 Copa América, the oldest continental football competition, where Colombia won the tournament.
Estadio Atanasio Girardot was one of the eight venues for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The opening match at the stadium featured North Korea vs England, ending in a draw, attended by 25,000 spectators. Brazil won the tournament, with the final taking place in Bogotá in front of 36,000 fans.
Atlético Nacional achieved its first Copa Libertadores title in 1989, becoming the first Colombian club to win the South American championship for football clubs.
In 2016, Atlético Nacional finished third in their first FIFA Club World Cup participation, while the world-famous Real Madrid CF won the tournament in Yokohama, Japan.
Atlético Nacional, founded in 1947, and DIM, founded in 1913, are the most popular football clubs from Medellín and use the stadium for home games.
Both clubs have won the Colombian top-flight football league multiple times.
Atlético Nacional became the first football club from Medellín with 10 top-division titles and has a strong fanbase across social media platforms.
The stadium regularly hosts domestic league derbies, international friendlies, and youth tournaments, cementing its role as a key football venue in Medellín.
