Çaykur Didi Stadium is the modern football complex of Rize, the pearl of the Black Sea region. The stadium was officially opened for service on August 24, 2009, with a ceremony attended by then-President Abdullah Gül. It is named after Metin Kalkavan, a famous former Rize footballer and administrator widely and affectionately known by his nickname “Didi.” The construction of the stadium arose from the need to replace Rize’s old city stadium with a facility that could meet modern football requirements.
