Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fu?ball, one of the first German sports clubs with 1 million followers on its main social media page, use the BayArena for home games. The club was founded in 1904 by employees of the pharmaceutical company Bayer, whose headquarters are in Leverkusen and from which the football club draws its name. The football stadium named BayArena opened in 1958 as the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion. Ulrich Klaus Walther Werner Haberland was a chairman of the pharmaceutical company Bayer.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fu?ball reached the prestigious UEFA Champions League final in 2002 for the first time in their history. Bayer Leverkusen lost the final against the world famous Spanish side Real Madrid. The game was played in Glasgow in front of 52,000 spectators. Lucimar Ferreira da Silva, commonly known as Lúcio, scored the only goal for Bayer Leverkusen in the final. Raúl González Blanco and Zinédine Yazid Zidane both scored for Real Madrid in the final. Bayer Leverkusen finished second place in the German top-flight football league in 2002. The same year, they lost the German cup final against FC Schalke 04.
