Welford Road Stadium is a historic rugby union venue located in Leicester, England. Opened on 10 September 1892, the stadium has been the long-standing home of Leicester FC, commonly known as the Leicester Tigers, and has played a central role in both domestic and international rugby union.
With a seating capacity of approximately 25,000, Welford Road combines a traditional stadium atmosphere with facilities that support top-level rugby union competitions.
Leicester FC, founded in 1880, has been a tenant of Welford Road Stadium since its opening in 1892, beginning with a rugby union match that inaugurated the venue. The club is among the first European rugby union teams to surpass 100,000 followers on its main social media platform.
In 2013, Leicester FC became the first English rugby union club to win 10 top-division titles, securing their 10th championship with a 37-17 victory over Northampton Saints in a final attended by 81,000 spectators in London. During that domestic season, the club drew an average home attendance of 21,000, highlighting the stadium’s enduring popularity.
Welford Road Stadium has also hosted international rugby events, including Rugby World Cup matches. The venue hosted its first World Cup game in 1991, where the New Zealand national team defeated Italy in front of 15,000 spectators. The stadium hosted its second Rugby World Cup match in 1999. These matches contributed to Welford Road’s reputation as a venue capable of staging elite international rugby competitions.
