  • Soviet-Era Colossus (1935-1999): Originally opened as the Dinamo Stadium, it was a massive, bowl-shaped arena typical of Soviet design, with a capacity exceeding 70,000. For decades, it was one of the largest stadiums in the Soviet Union.

  • Post-Independence Decline & Renovation: After the collapse of the USSR, the massive stadium fell into severe disrepair. Its vast, crumbling terraces were unsafe and impractical for the smaller crowds of independent Armenia.

  • Complete Reconstruction (1999-2008): A decision was made not to restore but to completely rebuild the stadium. The old bowl was largely demolished. In its place, a modern, UEFA-compliant arena was constructed within the original outer walls and framework. This project, completed in phases, radically reduced the capacity to a more manageable 14,000 while creating a modern, all-seater stadium with covered stands, new facilities, and a high-quality pitch. The historic outer shell was preserved, maintaining the stadium’s iconic silhouette on the Yerevan skyline.
