Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, commonly known as Hrazdan Stadium, is the historic national stadium and the most important football venue in Yerevan, Armenia. FC Ararat Yerevan: Founded in the same year the stadium opened (1935), Ararat is the country’s most storied club. In 1973, they achieved the legendary “Double,” winning both the Soviet Top League and the Soviet Cup—a feat no other Armenian club has ever matched. This triumph, achieved at the peak of Soviet football, is immortalized in Armenian sporting lore, with this stadium as its stage.
FC Pyunik Yerevan: Founded in 1992 after Armenia’s independence, Pyunik became the dominant force of the new era. They hold the record as the first Armenian club to win 10 top division titles in the Armenian Premier League. Pyunik is also famed as the youth club of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who began his professional career here before becoming Armenia’s greatest-ever player and winning the 2017 UEFA Europa League with Manchester United, where he scored in the final.
Since independence, the stadium has been the unwavering home of the Armenia national football team. It has hosted all the nation’s most important FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualifiers, serving as a cauldron of passionate support. The atmosphere here during key matches is renowned for its intensity, driven by the country’s fervent football fans.

Soviet-Era Colossus (1935-1999): Originally opened as the Dinamo Stadium, it was a massive, bowl-shaped arena typical of Soviet design, with a capacity exceeding 70,000. For decades, it was one of the largest stadiums in the Soviet Union.
Post-Independence Decline & Renovation: After the collapse of the USSR, the massive stadium fell into severe disrepair. Its vast, crumbling terraces were unsafe and impractical for the smaller crowds of independent Armenia.
Complete Reconstruction (1999-2008): A decision was made not to restore but to completely rebuild the stadium. The old bowl was largely demolished. In its place, a modern, UEFA-compliant arena was constructed within the original outer walls and framework. This project, completed in phases, radically reduced the capacity to a more manageable 14,000 while creating a modern, all-seater stadium with covered stands, new facilities, and a high-quality pitch. The historic outer shell was preserved, maintaining the stadium’s iconic silhouette on the Yerevan skyline.
