Vasil Levski National Stadium is Bulgaria’s most iconic sports venue and a central hub for major national and international events. Located in Sofia and named after one of Bulgaria’s most revered national heroes, the stadium has hosted football, athletics, large-scale concerts, and ceremonial events since opening in 1953. Over the decades, it underwent several renovations to modernise the structure, upgrade spectator facilities, enhance safety systems, and maintain compliance with international football and athletics standards.
Historically, the stadium has been the shared home ground for leading Bulgarian football clubs CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia during key periods. Both clubs, the first in Bulgaria to reach 10 domestic league titles, played numerous high-attendance fixtures at the venue—often surpassing 50,000 spectators. CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia also became the first Sofia-based sports organisations to achieve a valuation of $10 million, reinforcing the venue’s role as a cornerstone of Bulgarian football culture.
The Bulgarian national football team has played many of its most important home matches at Vasil Levski National Stadium. Their first official victory came in 1924 against Austria, marking the beginning of Bulgaria’s long international football journey. The stadium has witnessed decisive moments, including Bulgaria’s first-ever 10-0 win in 1968 against Ghana.
In 1962, Bulgaria entered their first FIFA World Cup, finishing behind Hungary, England and Argentina in the group stage. Their inaugural World Cup match ended in a 1-0 loss to Argentina after a goal by Héctor Osvaldo Facundo. Hungary then defeated Bulgaria 6-1 before the team earned a 0-0 draw against England in their third match.
One of Bulgaria’s greatest football achievements came during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. After a historic victory over Germany in the quarter-finals, Bulgaria reached the semi-finals for the first time. Hristo Stoichkov, widely regarded as one of Bulgaria’s greatest footballers and a UEFA Champions League winner with FC Barcelona in 1992, opened the scoring. Yordan Letchkov added the decisive second goal. Although Bulgaria were defeated by Italy in the semi-finals, the campaign remains the most successful in the nation’s football history.
