Construction began in December 1998 and was completed for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s most distinctive feature is its crown-shaped roof, which earned it the nickname “Big Crown.” This design symbolizes Ulsan’s status as the industrial capital of South Korea, with the crown representing excellence and leadership.
It is a football-specific stadium (without an athletics track), designed to provide an intimate and intense atmosphere for spectators, with stands close to the pitch. The stadium complex is part of the larger Munsu Sports Park, which includes auxiliary training pitches and facilities.
The stadium’s history is marked by several landmark events:
Inaugural Match (April 28, 2001): The stadium opened with a historic friendly where South Korea defeated Brazil 1-0, a symbolic victory that boosted national confidence ahead of the World Cup.
2002 FIFA World Cup: It hosted three first-round matches and one round of 16 match, including games featuring the eventual champion, Brazil.

AFC Champions League Final 2012: On November 10, 2012, Ulsan Hyundai defeated Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli 3-0 at this stadium to win their first-ever AFC Champions League title.
AFC Asian Cup 2027: The stadium has been selected as a proposed venue for the upcoming tournament.
Ulsan Hyundai FC has been the stadium’s sole primary tenant since its opening in 2001. The club, originally founded as the Hyundai Horang-i in 1983, is the corporate club of Hyundai Heavy Industries. It is one of the K League’s most successful teams, with multiple domestic league titles. Their legacy is closely tied to this stadium, where they secured their historic continental triumph in 2012 and clinched decisive K League 1 titles in recent years (2022, 2023).
The stadium has undergone significant upgrades to enhance its functionality and spectator experience:
2013: A major renovation focused on upgrading VIP and media facilities, concourse amenities, and installing a new high-definition video scoreboard following its role in the 2012 AFC Champions League final.
2017-2019: As part of a bid to host matches for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup (which was ultimately held in Qatar), the stadium underwent further renovations, including pitch replacement, seating upgrades, and improvements to accessibility and lighting systems. These upgrades also prepared it for its selection as a proposed venue for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
