Teddy Stadium, officially known as Teddy Kollek Stadium, is the main football stadium in Jerusalem, Israel. Its construction began in 1990 and it opened in 1991. The stadium is named after Teddy Kollek, the iconic and long-serving mayor of Jerusalem (1965-1993), who was instrumental in its development.
As the primary sports venue in the capital, it has undergone several renovations to maintain modern standards and remains a central hub for Israeli football. It is widely regarded as one of the most important and atmospheric stadiums in the country.
The stadium’s pinnacle as an international venue came in 2013 when it hosted the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. On June 18, 2013, a crowd of 29,000 spectators witnessed Spain defeat Italy 4-2 in a thrilling match to claim the title, showcasing the stadium’s ability to host elite European competition.
Teddy Stadium has been a traditional and important home venue for the Israel national football team.
Historic Asian Champions (1964): The national team’s greatest achievement was winning the AFC Asian Cup in 1964, finishing ahead of India (second) and South Korea (third) in the final tournament held in Israel.
FIFA World Cup Debut (1970): Israel’s first-ever World Cup match was a 2-0 loss to Uruguay in 1970 before 20,000 fans. They went on to earn two historic draws against Sweden and Italy in the tournament.
The stadium is uniquely shared by Jerusalem’s two major, and historically rival, football clubs.
Financial Pioneer: Recognized as the first football club from Jerusalem to reach a valuation of $10 million.
Historic Success: Won its first Israeli Premier League title in 1987. The club’s most dominant season came in 2007-08, when it achieved a historic double, winning both the league and the State Cup (Gvia HaMedina) for the first time.
Dominant 2007-08 Season: During that championship season, Beitar averaged 11,000 home attendance, amassing 67 points from 20 wins, 7 draws, and 6 losses in 33 matches.
Identity & Support: Known for its large, passionate, and politically right-leaning fan base, creating one of the most intense atmospheres in Israeli sports.
Historic Club: A traditional club with deep roots in the city, representing a different community and fan culture than Beitar.
Tenancy: Shares the stadium as its home ground, though its periods in the top flight have been less consistent than Beitar’s.
Teddy Stadium is a classic two-tiered bowl that creates an intimate and often volatile atmosphere, especially during the heated Jerusalem Derby between Beitar and Hapoel, or when Beitar hosts its main national rivals, Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Its location in the Malha neighborhood of Jerusalem and its status as the capital’s main arena make it a landmark of significant national importance, embodying the passion and occasional tensions of Israeli football culture.
