Takhti Stadium (Persian: ورزشگاه تختی, Varzeshgāh-e Takhti) is a historic multi-purpose stadium located within the expansive Takhti Sport Complex in central Tehran. It was inaugurated on June 3, 1973, and named in honor of the legendary Iranian wrestler Gholamreza Takhti, an Olympic gold medalist and national folk hero renowned for his strength and chivalry (Javanmardi).
As part of one of Iran’s largest and most important sports complexes, the stadium was designed to host major national sporting events, particularly football and athletics.

Athletics Track: The stadium features a full 400-meter, 8-lane running track that encircles the football pitch, defining its primary use for track and field competitions.

Throughout its history, Takhti Stadium has served several key roles in Iranian sport:
National Team Venue: Prior to the dominance of the Azadi Stadium, Takhti was a primary home for the Iran national football team (Team Melli), hosting numerous World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies during the 1970s and beyond.
Club Football Home: It has been used as a home ground by several major Tehran clubs at various times, including Persepolis FC, Esteghlal FC, and Saipa FC, especially when their primary venues were under renovation or for specific cup matches.
Major Athletics Hub: The stadium is the nation’s premier venue for track and field, hosting the Iranian National Athletics Championships and other major meets.
Part of a Larger Complex: Its location within the Takhti Sport Complex—which includes swimming pools, gymnasiums, and other facilities—makes it a central piece of Iran’s public sports infrastructure.
While the larger Azadi Stadium (capacity 78,116) has become Iran’s undisputed national football temple, Takhti Stadium retains immense historical and functional importance.
It represents an earlier generation of Iranian sports infrastructure—a publicly-owned complex dedicated to fostering sport at all levels. Today, it continues to be a vital venue for athletics, lower-division football, and occasional top-flight matches when needed. Its historical connection to the revered Gholamreza Takhti and its role in hosting iconic Team Melli matches of the past ensure it remains a respected and recognizable landmark in Iranian sports history.
