The stadium is named after the Mulawarman Kingdom, a historic Hindu kingdom that once flourished in the region, connecting the venue to the deep cultural heritage of Kalimantan.
As one of the major sporting venues in East Kalimantan, it has played a notable role in the region’s football history, particularly as the former home of a professional club.
The stadium’s design reflects its early-1990s construction and multi-purpose intent:
Athletics Track: It features a standard 400-meter running track surrounding the football pitch, making it suitable for regional athletics competitions.
Football Pitch: A natural grass playing surface.
Infrastructure: Likely features a main covered grandstand with additional open terraces or seating. Its capacity of 12,000 made it a significant venue for major regional events when it opened.
The stadium’s primary historical significance is its association with Bontang FC (later known as Pusamania Borneo FC during its time based in Bontang).
Club History: The club, backed by the large local company Pupuk Kaltim, was a fixture in Indonesia’s top-flight leagues (Liga Indonesia Premier Division and later Indonesia Super League) for many years in the late 1990s and 2000s.
Golden Era: During this period, Stadion Mulawarman was a formidable home ground, known for its passionate local supporters. The club achieved notable success, including finishing as runners-up in the 2005 Liga Indonesia Premier Division.
Club Relocation: The club eventually relocated to Samarinda (becoming Borneo FC) in 2014, moving to the larger Segiri Stadium. This departure left Stadion Mulawarman without a regular top-tier tenant.
Following the departure of its flagship tenant, the stadium’s role has shifted:
Local Football: It remains a venue for local club matches, youth tournaments, and school sports events.
Athletics: Continues to serve as a facility for track and field meets.
Community Events: Hosts various city-level events and ceremonies.
Historical Landmark: It stands as a monument to Bontang’s proud footballing past during its industrial boom period, remembered fondly by fans for the atmosphere of major professional matches.
Stadion Mulawarman represents an important chapter in the development of professional football outside of Java in Indonesia.
