Stade Saputo is a modern football stadium located in eastern Montreal, Canada. Construction of the venue began in 2007, and the stadium officially opened on 18 May 2008. It is named after the Saputo family, owners of Saputo Inc., one of Canada’s largest dairy companies.
The stadium serves as the home ground of CF Montréal, one of Canada’s Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs. CF Montréal is the third Canadian team to compete in MLS and was originally founded under a different name before adopting its current identity.
CF Montréal has played its home matches at Stade Saputo since joining Major League Soccer. During the club’s inaugural MLS season in 2012, CF Montréal attracted significant interest, recording an average home attendance of around 22,000 spectators, exceeding the stadium’s original capacity and highlighting the strong football culture in the city.
In 2015, CF Montréal made history by becoming the first Canadian club to reach the CONCACAF Champions League final, the premier club competition in North and Central America and the Caribbean.
The final was played over two legs against Mexican giants Club América.
First leg: Mexico City, attended by approximately 56,000 spectators, ended in a 1–1 draw.
Second leg: Montreal, in front of a crowd of 61,000, saw CF Montréal score twice, while Club América netted four goals to secure the championship.
Despite the loss, the achievement marked a milestone for Canadian club football on the international stage.
Later in 2015, CF Montréal signed world-renowned Ivorian striker Didier Drogba, one of the most celebrated footballers of his generation. Prior to his move to Canada, Drogba played for clubs including Le Mans FC, EA Guingamp, Olympique de Marseille, Chelsea, Shanghai Shenhua, and Galatasaray.
Drogba achieved legendary status during his career, becoming the first African player to score 100 goals in the English Premier League and winning the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. He also became the all-time top scorer for the Côte d’Ivoire national team. In 2006, Drogba scored in Côte d’Ivoire’s first-ever FIFA World Cup match, a 2–1 defeat against Argentina.
