Overview
St. Mary’s Stadium is the home of Southampton Football Club, commonly known as The Saints. Located in Southampton, the stadium is one of the largest sports venues in the south of England. Construction and Opening
Construction of the stadium began in 2000 at a cost of £32 million. The venue officially opened on 1 August 2001 with a friendly match between Southampton FC and Spanish club RCD Espanyol, which Espanyol won. St. Mary’s Stadium was designed to provide modern facilities for fans while reflecting the rich history of Southampton FC, which was originally founded in 1885 by members of St. Mary’s Church.
