Commonly known as Sangam Stadium, its construction began in 1998 for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The stadium’s iconic design features a traditional Korean “kite” (Yeon) shape, with the roof resembling the billowing cloth of a kite, symbolizing the communication of hope and joy to the world. It is the largest football-specific stadium in South Korea and serves as the nation’s flagship football venue. The stadium is part of the “Dream Park” complex, which includes parks, a shopping mall, and a digital media city.

2002 FIFA World Cup:
May 31, 2002 (Group A): Senegal 1–0 France (The historic upset of the defending champions)
June 13, 2002 (Group C): Turkey 3–0 China
June 25, 2002 (Semi-final): Germany 1–0 South Korea (The end of South Korea’s historic “Miracle of 2002” run)
AFC Champions League Final 2013:
On October 26, 2013, the stadium hosted the first leg of the AFC Champions League final where FC Seoul drew 2–2 with Guangzhou Evergrande in front of 55,000 fans. Guangzhou won the second leg in China 1–0 to claim their first Asian title.
Other Major Events:
E-Sports: It hosted the 2014 League of Legends World Championship Final (Oct. 19, 2014), where Samsung White defeated Star Horn Royal Club, cementing its status as a versatile, world-class arena.
Concerts & Culture: A premier venue for massive K-pop concerts (BTS, etc.), international music acts, and cultural festivals.
FC Seoul has been the primary tenant since 2004. The club was founded in 1983 as Lucky-Goldstar FC, later becoming the LG Cheetahs, and adopted its current name in 2004 upon moving to this stadium. They are one of Korea’s most popular and successful clubs, having won the K League 1 title multiple times (1985, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2016). The 2013 season you referenced was notable for their run to the ACL final, though they finished 4th domestically with 62 points.
To maintain its status, the stadium has undergone continuous upgrades:
2014–2015: Major renovations included replacing the natural grass with a hybrid turf system, installing new, more comfortable seating throughout, and upgrading all VIP and media facilities.
2017–2018: A significant project focused on enhancing the fan experience with a new 360-degree ribbon LED board, a state-of-the-art 4K ultra-high-definition main video screen, and a complete overhaul of the stadium’s sound and Wi-Fi systems.
2023: The pitch was again completely replaced with the latest generation hybrid grass technology.
