The construction of the Sapporo Dome, which is located on the island of Hokkaido, started in 1998. It is known as a venue for several events, like American football, baseball, concerts, football and rugby union. Football games at the stadium are held on a grass pitch that slides into and out of the sports venue as needed. The Sapporo Dome hosted several Olympic football matches.
In 2002, the venue hosted FIFA World Cup matches for the national football teams of the Argentine Republic, Ecuador, England, Germany, the Italian Republic and Saudi Arabia. The first-ever FIFA World Cup game at the stadium was won by Germany after beating Saudi Arabia 8-0. 32,000 fans showed up for the game, which took place on 1 June 2002.
The first-ever Rugby World Cup game at the Sapporo Dome took place on 21 September 2019. The national rugby union team of Australia won the game against Fiji 39-21. 36,000 people attended the match. One day later, England won the second 2019 Rugby World Cup match at the Sapporo Dome. England defeated Tonga 35-3 in front of 35,000 spectators.
Football club Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo and baseball club Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters use the stadium for home games. The football club was founded in 1935 under a different name and the baseball club was founded in 1945 under a different name. The Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters won the Japan Series in 1962 for the first time in their history. Yu Darvish, one of the first baseball players in the world with 1 million followers on his main social media page, is one of their former players. In 2012, he played his first-ever Major League Baseball game. Yu Darvish won the match with the Texas Rangers after beating the Seattle Mariners.
