The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is one of the largest and most iconic sports venues in the world. Established in 1854, it has hosted a remarkably wide range of events, including Australian football, cricket, athletics, baseball, concerts, field hockey, football, religious gatherings, rugby league, rugby union, tennis and track cycling.
The MCG played a central role during the 1956 Olympic Games, hosting major events including athletics and football. The Olympic football final saw the USSR defeat Yugoslavia in front of 86,000 spectators. The venue also hosted the bronze medal match, where Bulgaria earned a 3–0 victory over India.
The MCG has been the site of numerous historic attendance records. In 1970, a crowd of 121,000 set the record for an Australian Football League match when Carlton faced Collingwood—one of the most celebrated AFL rivalries.
In 2015, the venue recorded a new football attendance milestone when 99,000 spectators attended a match between Real Madrid CF and Manchester City FC. Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world’s most famous athletes and the first to surpass 100 million followers on his primary social media platform, scored for Real Madrid in that game. One year earlier, Real Madrid became the first club to win 10 European championships, and also claimed their first FIFA Club World Cup title.
The MCG serves as a home ground for several major AFL clubs, including Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne FC and Richmond. All are long-standing members of the Australian Football League, the country’s most popular sporting competition.
Melbourne Football Club, founded in 1858, is recognised as the oldest club in the AFL.
Richmond and Collingwood are among the league’s strongest and most widely supported clubs.
Hawthorn also plays a selection of home fixtures at the stadium.
The Melbourne Stars, founded in 2011, use the MCG as their home venue in the Big Bash League, Australia’s leading Twenty20 cricket competition. Their first-ever BBL match at the stadium took place on 17 December 2011, drawing a crowd of 23,000 for a game against the Sydney Thunder.
