1987 Cricket World Cup: The venue made its World Cup debut, hosting its first match on 9 October 1987, where Australia defeated India. Australia secured another victory at Chepauk in the same tournament, beating Zimbabwe. The stadium also hosted the first-ever knockout phase match of a Cricket World Cup to be held in Tamil Nadu, drawing a crowd of 48,000 spectators. Australia went on to win their first-ever World Cup title that year.
1996 & 2011 World Cups: The stadium continued its World Cup legacy by hosting matches in both the 1996 and 2011 tournaments, cementing its status as a premier global cricket venue.
Historic Test Matches: It has been the stage for numerous memorable Test matches, including India’s first-ever Test victory (against England in 1952) and several dramatic finishes.

Post-2015 Upgrades: Further improvements focused on drainage systems, pitch square modernization, and enhanced player facilities to meet the demands of international and IPL cricket.
Ongoing Maintenance: Continuous upgrades to lighting (for day-night matches), seating, and digital infrastructure ensure the century-old venue remains a state-of-the-art facility.
