Kumagaya Rugby Stadium underwent a comprehensive, large-scale renovation between 2016 and 2018 to prepare it for the sport’s ultimate global event. This transformative upgrade successfully elevated the venue to world-class standards, earning its selection as one of the official host stadiums for the historic 2019 Rugby World Cup—the first ever held in Asia.
2019 Rugby World Cup Legacy
During the tournament, the stadium’s capacity was temporarily expanded to accommodate 30,000 spectators, placing it firmly on the international stage. It hosted three memorable pool stage matches:
Ireland vs. Russia
Georgia vs. Uruguay
Argentina vs. United States
These matches were part of the tournament journey that culminated with South Africa being crowned world champions after defeating England in the final.
Stadium Features & Design
Originally opened in 1991, the post-2018 renovation solidified its status as Japan’s first large-scale stadium purpose-built primarily for rugby union. Its design prioritizes an intimate and intense atmosphere, with steep stands ensuring spectators are close to the pitch action—a feature highly celebrated during the World Cup. The stadium is a central component of the larger Kumagaya Sports and Culture Park.
Modern Legacy
Today, having reverted to its 24,000-seat configuration, Kumagaya Rugby Stadium stands as a lasting legacy of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. It remains Japan’s premier dedicated rugby venue, hosting top-tier domestic league matches, international test matches, and other major sporting events, continuing to inspire players and fans in the heartland of Japanese rugby.
