Construction and Opening
Construction of the stadium, named after former Saudi King Fahd, began in 1982.
Opened in 1987, it became the largest stadium by capacity in Saudi Arabia.
Features one of the largest stadium roofs in the world at the time, providing shade and comfort in the hot desert climate.
Youth Football and FIFA U-20 World Cup
Hosted the final of the tournament currently known as the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 1989.
Portugal defeated Nigeria 2-0 in front of 65,000 spectators.
Goals were scored by Abel Jorge Pereira da Silva and Jorge António Pinto do Couto.
Saudi National Football Team
Numerous home games for the Saudi national football team have been played here.
On 16 December 1984, Saudi Arabia won their first Asian Championship, defeating China in Singapore before 26,000 spectators.
The stadium has also hosted matches involving Saudi Arabia in international competitions.
1994 FIFA World Cup
While the stadium is not located in the USA, it served as a preparation and training hub for Saudi Arabia ahead of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
In the tournament, Saudi Arabia recorded victories over Morocco (2-1) and Belgium, and reached the round of 16, where they were defeated by Sweden.
Al-Hilal and Al-Shabab Football Clubs
Al-Hilal FC, founded in 1957, and Al-Shabab FC, founded in 1947, use the stadium for home matches.
Both clubs have won multiple Saudi top-flight league titles and Asian championships.
Al-Hilal won the 1991 Asian Club Championship, defeating Esteghlal from Iran in Qatar, and their second Asian title in 2000, defeating Júbilo Iwata of Japan 3-2 in front of 40,000 fans at King Fahd Stadium.
2019 FIFA Club World Cup
Hosted Al-Hilal’s first-ever world championship match in 2019.
Al-Hilal defeated Espérance Sportive de Tunis but lost in the semi-finals to Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.
Liverpool FC won the tournament, defeating Flamengo 1-0 with a goal by Roberto Firmino.
