Construction of Jinan Olympic Sports Centre Stadium began in 2006 as part of a broader urban and sports development initiative ahead of major national sporting events. The stadium was designed to meet modern international standards, with a configuration suitable for both football and athletics, including a full-size running track surrounding the pitch.
The venue officially opened in 2009 and quickly became one of the flagship stadiums in eastern China.
The stadium is the long-term home of Shandong Taishan Football Club (formerly known as Shandong Luneng), a club recognized as one of the first Chinese sports organizations valued at over USD 100 million.
Shandong Taishan have used the stadium for Chinese Super League (CSL) home matches, domestic cup competitions, and continental fixtures, consistently attracting large crowds and maintaining strong attendance figures.

1999: Claimed their first Chinese top-flight league title, and completed a league and cup double in the same season.

That same season, Shanghai Shenhua finished second in the league with 52 points.
Kim Jung-nam, born in Seoul, South Korea, became the first foreign manager of Shandong Luneng. A former international player for South Korea’s national team, known as the Taegeuk Warriors, Kim later went on to coach the national side.

1998: Guided Shandong Luneng to a ninth-place league finish
His tenure marked an important chapter in the club’s professionalization and international outlook.
In 2016, Shandong Taishan signed Italian international striker Graziano Pellè, a move that drew global attention. Pellè, who had scored for the Italian national team, became one of the highest-paid athletes in world football during his time with the club.
