Club Foundation & Tenure: Jeju United FC (originally founded as Yukong Elephants in 1983 and later known as Bucheon SK) moved to Jeju Island in 2006 and was rebranded. For the first seven years on the island (2006-2013), the club played its K League 1 home matches at the historic Jeju Stadium.
Island Football Hub: During this period, the stadium was the epicenter of professional football on Jeju, hosting domestic league matches, Korean FA Cup games, and AFC Champions League qualifiers. It fostered the initial growth of the club’s passionate local fanbase, known for their vibrant “Tangerine” support (Jeju is famous for its tangerines).
Built in the late 1960s, Jeju Stadium was a significant piece of infrastructure for the island.
Classic Multi-Purpose Design: It featured a standard design for its era: a natural grass football pitch surrounded by a running track, with large concrete terraces.
Community Landmark: For over 40 years, it was not just a sports venue but a central gathering place for the island. It hosted the Jeju Province Sports Festival, major cultural events, concerts, and public gatherings.
2014 Asian Games Training Venue: In its later years, it was used as a training venue for athletes participating in the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon.
The stadium’s role fundamentally changed with the construction of a new, modern facility.
The New Jeju World Cup Stadium: In 2001, a new Jeju World Cup Stadium was built in Seogwipo for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. While initially not used by the club, it remained the island’s premier venue.
Jeju United’s Move (2013): Ahead of the 2014 season, Jeju United relocated to the Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo, drawn by its superior facilities, larger capacity (~29,000), and lack of a running track, which created a better football atmosphere.
Current Use of Old Stadium: Following the club’s departure, the original Jeju Stadium in Jeju City has seen significantly reduced use. It remains a public asset but is now primarily used for local amateur sports, school events, and occasional community festivals rather than top-level professional matches. There have been discussions about redevelopment or repurposing the site.
The historic Jeju Stadium stands as a monument to the early days of professional football on the island.
