Jan Breydelstadion, one of Belgium’s prominent football stadiums, serves as the home ground for both Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge, two of the country’s historic clubs. Club Brugge, founded in 1891, and Cercle Brugge, founded in 1899, have both achieved multiple Belgian top-flight league titles. Cercle Brugge claimed their first championship in 1911, while Club Brugge won the league in 1920 and reached their first European club championship final in 1978, narrowly losing 1-0 to Liverpool FC in London in front of 92,000 spectators.
The stadium has a capacity of 29,000 and was one of the venues for the 2000 UEFA European Football Championship. The opening match at Jan Breydelstadion drew 26,000 fans, witnessing Spain defeat Yugoslavia. France also played three matches of the tournament at the stadium.
