Hampden Park, located in Glasgow, is one of the most iconic football stadiums in the United Kingdom and globally renowned for its history and atmosphere. Opened in 1903, it was once the largest stadium in the world by capacity and has hosted some of the most memorable events in Scottish and European football.
Historical Tenants
Queen’s Park Football Club, the oldest football club in Scotland, used Hampden Park as their home ground between 1903 and 2021. Celtic Football Club, one of Scotland’s most prominent clubs, played various home games at the stadium in the 1990s. Celtic became the first Scottish football club to win a European championship title. Additionally, the Scottish Claymores, a former American football team, held home matches at Hampden Park.
European Championship Finals – Club Level
Hampden Park has hosted multiple finals of the European championship for football clubs. Notably, in 1960, Real Madrid defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 in front of over 100,000 spectators, securing their fifth European title. The following year, SL Benfica from Portugal became the second club to win the European championship at Hampden Park.
European Championship for National Teams
During the 2021 UEFA European Championship, Hampden Park hosted group stage matches for Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland, Sweden, and Ukraine, as well as the round of 16 game between Sweden and Ukraine. The venue provided a vibrant setting for fans and players alike, showcasing Scotland’s continued prominence in hosting international football.
The Hampden Roar
One of Hampden Park’s defining features is the “Hampden Roar,” a legendary display of crowd noise. It was first famously noted in 1929 when Scotland, reduced to ten men due to injury, scored a last-minute equalizer against England. The roar was so intense that player Alexander Skinner Jackson, hospitalized at Glasgow Victoria Infirmary, could hear it and know the goal had been scored. The record attendance of 149,000 was set in 1937 during a Scotland vs. England match.
