The Gwangju World Cup Stadium is one of South Korea’s most prominent football venues and was constructed specifically for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. With a seating capacity of approximately 40,000, the stadium remains a central hub for professional football and major sporting events in the southwest of the country.
The stadium hosted multiple matches during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, involving the national teams of China, Costa Rica, South Korea, Slovenia, and Spain. Due to its historical significance, the venue is also widely known as the Guus Hiddink Stadium.
Under the leadership of Guus Hiddink, the South Korean national team—nicknamed the Taegeuk Warriors—reached the semi-finals of the tournament, marking the nation’s greatest achievement in FIFA World Cup history. South Korea advanced from the group stage ahead of the United States, Portugal, and Poland, and defeated Italy and Spain in the knockout rounds before losing 1–0 to Germany in the semi-finals in Seoul.
Guus Hiddink enjoyed a distinguished career as both a player and a manager. During his playing days, he represented De Graafschap, PSV Eindhoven, and NEC Nijmegen. His coaching breakthrough came in 1988, when he won the European Cup with PSV Eindhoven.
Hiddink later managed several elite clubs and national teams, including South Korea, the Netherlands, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Valencia CF, Fenerbahçe, and Anji Makhachkala. In 1998, he won the Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid after defeating Vasco da Gama of Brazil, and later that year guided the Netherlands to a fourth-place finish at the FIFA World Cup.
Gwangju FC, founded in 2010, has played numerous home matches at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium. The club attracted 36,000 spectators to its first-ever top-flight league match. In its inaugural season at the highest domestic level, Gwangju FC finished 11th, collecting 35 points from 30 matches, with nine wins, eight draws, and thirteen losses.
The Gwangju World Cup Stadium remains a landmark of South Korean football history. Its association with the 2002 FIFA World Cup and Guus Hiddink’s historic achievement ensures its lasting status as one of the country’s most iconic football venues.
