Opened in 1945, Green Park Stadium is one of India’s most historic cricket venues. It has long served as a key home ground for the Uttar Pradesh cricket team in domestic competitions and has hosted numerous matches for the Indian national cricket team, witnessing many memorable Test matches and One-Day Internationals over the decades.
The Gujarat Lions’ IPL Era
The stadium gained a vibrant new chapter as a host venue for the Indian Premier League (IPL). It became the adopted home of the Gujarat Lions franchise during their stint in the league.
2016 Inaugural Success: On 11 April 2016, the Lions won their first-ever IPL match at Green Park, defeating the Punjab Kings. They dominated their debut season, finishing first in the regular season with 18 points (9 wins, 5 losses) from 14 matches. Their campaign ended in the playoff stage with a loss to the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Final Season (2017): The Lions’ second and final season saw them finish seventh with 8 points (4 wins, 10 losses).
Stadium Atmosphere & Modern Relevance
With a capacity of 32,000, Green Park is known for its knowledgeable and passionate cricket crowds. While it hosts fewer international matches today, it remains an active and important venue for domestic cricket and occasional IPL fixtures, preserving its status as a cherished landmark in India’s cricketing geography.
