The Governor Okowa Main Bowl, located in Asaba, is a modern multipurpose sports facility that has rapidly become one of the most important stadiums in southern Nigeria. Opened in 2018, the venue forms part of the Stephen Keshi Stadium complex and was constructed to support football, athletics, and major sporting events at both national and regional levels.
Designed to host international-standard competitions, the stadium features a contemporary athletics track in addition to its 22,000-seat football bowl. Its size and modern infrastructure have made it a preferred destination for track-and-field events, state sports festivals, professional football matches, and government ceremonies.
The Governor Okowa Main Bowl has also served as one of the match venues for the Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles. Its selection for national team fixtures highlights the stadium’s ability to meet security, pitch quality, and spectator requirements necessary for high-profile matches.
The Super Eagles have a long and celebrated history in African and global football. They played their first-ever FIFA World Cup match in 1994, marking a landmark moment by defeating Bulgaria 3–0. The stadium’s involvement in hosting their games reflects Nigeria’s ongoing investment in improving football infrastructure across the country.
Since opening, the stadium has contributed significantly to sports development in Delta State. It regularly hosts athletics championships, youth tournaments, local league matches, and cultural events.
