The Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, commonly nicknamed La Casa Blanca (The White House), is a premier football stadium located in Quito, Ecuador. Construction began in March 1995, and the stadium officially opened in March 1997 with a football match between Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU) and the Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro, with the home side winning 3-1. With a seating capacity of 41,000, the stadium is renowned for hosting some of the largest attendances in Ecuadorian football, often exceeding 50,000 fans for key matches.
Liga Deportiva Universitaria (LDU), founded in 1918, is one of Ecuador’s most historic football clubs.
LDU has won 10 top-flight league titles, becoming one of the first Ecuadorian clubs to reach this milestone.
In 2008, LDU won the Copa Sudamericana, defeating Brazilian side Fluminense in a two-legged final, marking the first South American championship in the club’s history.
That same year, LDU reached the FIFA Club World Cup final in Japan, facing Manchester United in front of 68,000 fans. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the match.
The stadium regularly hosts domestic league matches, international tournaments, and high-profile friendlies, cementing its role as a football landmark in Quito and South America.
