The construction of the Estadio Olímpico Universitario started in 1950. The Estadio Olímpico Universitario, which is among the main Mexican sports venues, is also sometimes used for athletics. It was one of the Games of the XIX Olympiad venues. The stadium also hosted 1986 FIFA World Cup matches. The first-ever FIFA World Cup game at the venue took place on 2 June 1986. The national football team of the Argentine Republic, commonly known as Argentina, won the game against Korea 3-1. Bulgaria, the French Republic and the Italian Republic also played at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario during the FIFA World Cup.
The national football team of the United Mexican States, commonly known as Mexico, played numerous home games at the stadium. They played numerous FIFA World Cup matches. Several football clubs played home games at the venue. One of those clubs is Club América, the first football club from North America with 10 million followers on its main social media page.
Club Universidad Nacional, nicknamed Pumas, use the stadium for home games. The club was founded in 1954 under a different name. It became one of the first Mexican sports clubs with 1 million followers on its main social media page. In 1977, the Pumas were crowned Mexican football champions for the first time in their history after beating Club Leones Negros de la Universidad de Guadalajara. Universidad Nacional won the North American championship for football clubs three times in the 1980s. In 1980, they won the tournament for the first time in their history. The Pumas won their second North American championship title in 1982. In 1989, they won the tournament for the third time in their history.
