Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto is the largest and most modern sports venue in Mozambique and serves as a key landmark in the development of national sports. Located in Maputo, the stadium was built with financial assistance from the Chinese government and officially opened in 2011. It remains a central hub for international football matches, national competitions, cultural events, and major athletics tournaments.
As the home ground of the Mozambique national football team—commonly known as the Mambas—the stadium hosts FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches, and numerous regional and international fixtures. Its design and infrastructure meet international standards and position the venue as one of the most important stadiums in Southern Africa.
Mozambique’s football history includes notable participation in the 1986 African Cup of Nations, their first appearance in the continental championship.
