Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, nicknamed El Coloso de Ñuñoa, is Chile’s iconic sports venue. Constructed on former farmland beginning in 1937, it officially opened in 1938 with a football match won by Colo-Colo. Since then, it has hosted countless historic domestic and international events, becoming a symbol of Chilean football and sports culture.
1962 FIFA World Cup
The stadium hosted several key matches of the 1962 FIFA World Cup, including the final, where Brazil defeated Czechoslovakia in front of 68,000 spectators. The tournament saw Chile finish in third place, marking the nation’s best performance in a FIFA World Cup.
Record Attendance
In 1962, 85,000 fans attended a match between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica, setting the stadium’s record attendance for a domestic match.

The stadium is home to Universidad de Chile, founded in 1927. The club has won multiple top-flight Chilean championships and maintains one of the country’s fiercest rivalries with Colo-Colo, which has won over 20 national league titles.
